World Cycling Championship road race stopped after eco-berks 'cements hands to route'

The UCI World Championship Cycling road race has been temporarily stopped after it was interrupted by eco-berks.

The men's elite road race took place on Sunday, taking place between Edinburgh and Glasgow, however the race had to be stopped due to a protest with 191.8km to go. GCN reported that one protestor had "cemented" their hands to the road.

A UCI statement said: "Further to Police Scotland’s confirmation of a protest in the Carron Valley area, which has temporarily interrupted the men’s road race, we are working closely with all relevant authorities to minimise disruption to the race and also to ensure the safety of riders as our paramount concern.”

Environmental activist group This is Rigged claimed responsibility: "Four people with This Is Rigged have blocked the road, halting the Men's Elite Race at the Cycling World Championships this morning. They remain on the road with the race unable to continue for the last 40 min."

However, fans were quick to point fingers at Just Stop Oil. "If this is just stop oil, they can continue to just go fuck themselves," one fan fumed. While a second added: "One of the most environmentally friendly pastimes, cycling has been stopped by people protesting against oil use..."

"Was wondering if it is safe to assume it is the "Just Stop Oil" fools who probably got dropped off there by a car. is it true," a third added. While a fourth tweeted: "The irony of a cycling race being stopped..."
